New Coronavirus has an enormous impact on MLB. 
Washington state governor, Jay Inslee announced on Wednesday local time restrictions on gatherings of 250-plus people in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties until the end of March. The restrictions might be prolonged again. There have been twenty-four confirms death and more than 250 diagnosed cases in the state of Washington as of Wednesday morning. Major sports events, concerts, cultural events, etc will be canceled by that. 


Although the Mariners were scheduled to have a four-game series vs. the Texas Rangers as an opening series from March 26-29 and then a three-game set against the Minnesota Twins from March 30-April 1 in Seattle, they have to change the plans for the first seven games. 


According to Mariners CEO, John Stanton, they have three options. 
Firstly, they could have a plan that they have an opening set against the Rangers by staying in Arizona after spring training.
Secondly, They go to Texas and Minnesota to have the games with the Rangers and Twins. 
Thirdly, they have the games at T-Mobile park without spectators. 


The Mariners are now contacting Peoria City, Arizona, MLB, the MLB Players Association, the Diamondbacks, who have home jurisdiction in the area, and the Padres, who share their spring camp facility. 


Now, opening day is coming near, but new coronavirus is throwing cold water on not only NPB but also MLB.  

The Minnesota Twins had an exhibition match against the Boston Red Sox at JetBlue Park, Florida on March 8, Sunday. 


Kenta Maeda, who transferred from the Dodgers to the Twins this off-season, played as a starting pitcher. Maeda had four scoreless
​ innings to allow just two hits and walk none with six strikeouts. His ERA is 2.08 this spring. 


Maeda said after the game, “Last outing, I [threw] a lot of pitches, so I’m glad I was able to be efficient today,” Maeda said after his start. “Everything from the delivery to the pitches, everything worked in sync. It was great overall.”(cited from MLB.com)


Twins manager, Rocco Baldelli commented “He commanded all of his pitches exceptionally well today,” Baldelli said. “His fastball command allowed everything else to play up really well. You really got to see a tremendous version of Kenta out there and it’s fun to watch.”(cited from MLB.com)

ミネソタ・ツインズは、現地時間３月８日、日曜日にフロリダ州のジェットブルー・パークでボストン・レッドソックスとオープン戦を行った。


ツインズは今オフにドジャースから移籍した前田健太投手が先発。４回を投げて、２安打四死球なしの無失点、奪三振６と快投を見せた。今オープン戦の防御率は２.０８と好調をキープした。


試合後、前田投手は、「前回は球数が多かったが、今日は効率的に投げられた。投球のすべてがバランスが良かった。全体を通してよく投げられた」と満足気に語った。


ロッコ・バルデッリ監督は、「今日は、全ての球種が非常によくコントロールされていた。速球が本当に良かった。素晴らしい健太をみて、楽しんでいる」とほめた。

Seattle Mariners had an exhibition match vs. San Diego Padres at Peoria Stadium on March 5. The Starting pitcher was Yusei Kikuchi, who had his third Cactus League appearance. The lefty from Japan amazingly pitched well. 

The 28-year-old allowed no hits with alongside two walks and five strikeouts in three frames and had three scoreless innings. His maximum velocity reached 96 mph in his final inning. 

Kikuchi said, “Not just velocity-wise, but overall. Each time out I’ve had fewer things I need to work on during the game, which is a good thing. I think it’s huge that I was able to get a strikeout with three different pitches today.”(Cited from MLB.com)

Also, Mariners manager, Scott Servais commented in praise of the hopeful pitcher, “We’ve seen the velocity be higher all spring with Yusei. He’s looked really good all spring. He looks like a different guy. I’m excited as he continues to get stretched out here this spring.”(Cited from MLB.com)

Yusei Kikuchi, who is a key player to the success of the Mariners’ bullpen, is proceeding favorably this spring.

先発したのは、菊池雄星投手で、この春、３度目の登板となったが、前回にも増して見事な投球を披露した。

３回を投げて、無失点で被安打はなし。四球が２つ。三振は５つ奪った。この日も直球は走っており、最後のイニングで約１５５キロ（９６マイル）に達した。

菊池投手は、インタビューで、「昨年と比べて、すでに良い状態にある。球速だけではなく全体的に。登板ごとに試合中の課題が少なくなってきている。それはとても良いこと。今日、３つの違う球種で三振を取れたのは大きいと思う。」と答えた。

スコット・サービス監督は、「雄星はこの春、より速い直球を見せている。とてもいい。（昨年とは）見違える投球だ。彼がこの春、成長し続けていることにエキサイトしている」と２年目左腕の成長に目を細めた。

今年のマリナーズ投手陣の鍵を握る菊池投手がこの春、順調に歩みを進めている。

Former Mariners star pitcher, Felix Hernandez, who had a minor deal with the Atlanta Braves as a free agent this winter, has been in good condition this spring.

Ex-Cy Young pitcher has had a 2.08 ERA with just one ER in 8.2 frames over a three-time game started so far.

He was called “King Felix” and played as an implicit ace with Seattle for many years. Over the past a couple of years, a series of injuries made him suffer from a slump. So, the 33-year-old is now an invitation player from Minor and is a position, who has to record better results this spring. But he is now surely competing for the seat of the starting rotation and promoting to Major.

Felix gave up just one ER, four hits with two strikeouts over four innings in a game against the Tampa Bay Rays on March 3 local time. 

The Braves manager, Brian Snitker praised Felix after the game, “He’s a guy that knows what he’s doing and he can maneuver through a lineup and execute pitches. He’s a guy that doesn’t probably have the stuff he did 10 years ago, but he knows what he’s doing. Guys like that hit spots and change speeds. They keep hitters off-balance. Also, he said, "I can control both sides of the plate. My curveball is always there. I’m just working on my changeup a little bit. If I can throw those three pitches, I,ll be just fine." (Cited from MLB.com)

Hernandez was an iron-armed pitcher several years ago and achieved a perfect game in 2012 which is the first time in the Mariners franchise history. Although it may be still early to call him a veteran player, one of the greatest pitchers is aiming at Major with his control, breaking ball, the combination of the two, and a lot of experiences. 

He is a special player for Seattle fans. The days he enthuses Atlanta fans on his next stage could be approaching.

昨シーズンオフにシアトル・マリナーズからFAとなり、アトランタ・ブレーブスとマイナー契約したフェリックス・ヘルナンデス投手が、この春、好調をキープしている。

今、オープン戦では、ここまで３試合に先発し、８回２／３を投げて、自責点１の防御率２.０８と安定している。

マリナーズでは、「キング・フェリックス」と呼ばれ、長年エースとして活躍してきた３３歳は、初めての移籍先で、先発ローテーションを争っている。ここ３年は相次ぐ故障もあり、満足な成績を残せないままマリナーズを去った元・サイ・ヤング賞投手のこの春の位置付けは、招待選手だ。ここで結果を出す事がメジャー昇格そして、先発ローテーション獲得に欠かせいない立場だ。

現地時間、３月３日に行われた、レイズとの試合では、長めの４回を投げて、許したヒット４本に自責点１、奪三振２と結果を出した。

ブライアン・スニッカー監督は、「彼は自分のすべき事をわかっているし、相手打線を巧みにかわし、ピッチングをした。１０年前のような状態ではないだろうが。彼は、緩急をつけて、打者のバランスを崩した。さすがだ。」とベテラン投手を褒めた。

ヘルナンデス投手も言う、「私はホームプレートの両サイドにコントロールできる。私のカーブはいつもそこに（投げることが）できる。チェンジアップも少し機能し始めている。それらの３球種が投げられれば、上手くいくだろう」と。

かつては、剛腕でマリナーズ史上初の完全試合も達成した偉大な投手。今は、ベテランと呼ぶにはまだ早い気もするが、制球力と変化球、そしてそれらのコンビネーションと圧倒的な経験でしたたかに、メジャー昇格を狙っている。

シアトルのファンも格別の想いのあるキング・フェリックス。今度はアトランタを熱狂させる日も近いかもしれない。

The New York Yankees had an exhibition game with the Boston Red Sox at George M. Steinbrenner Field, Tampa Florida on March 3. 

Masahiro Tanaka took the second mound this spring as a starter and pitched very well. The 31-year-old allowed no hit, no run and had five strikeouts in three frames. The Yankees pumped out hits to earn six runs in the bottom of the first after Tanaka retired the first three batters in the top of the first inning. Although the right-handed pitcher was kept waiting for a long while during Yanks’ offense, he pitched almost perfectly in the next two innings.

Tanaka said, ”Those things tend to happen during the season, so with that in mind, I think it was good to go through something like that.”

Also, Aaron Boone commented, "Masa seemed really dialed in with everything. There was life on his fastball, command of it. He mixed in the cutter effectively. I thought he threw some good splits and spun the breaking ball, so three really, really strong innings where I'm assuming he's pretty pleased with it."

His next outing is scheduled on March 8, Sunday against the Braves.

田中将大投手が順調な仕上がりを具合を見せた。ニューヨーク・ヤンキースは、現地時間３日、フロリダ州タンパのジョージMスタインブレナーフィールドでボストンレッドソックスとエキシビジョンゲームを行った。

田中将大投手は、２回目の先発登板をし、３回を投げて、無安打無失点で５つの三振を奪う好投を見せた。１回表に３者凡退に抑えた後の、その裏、ヤンキース打線が６点を奪う猛攻を見せて、田中投手は長く待たされる形となった。しかし、その影響はなく、２回、３回と危なげない投球を見せた。

田中投手は、「こう言った（長く待たされる）状況はシーズン中でも起こりがちなので、そう言った状況を経験できたのは良かった」と振り返った。

アーロン・ブーン監督は、「マサは、全て本当に上手く投げていた。速球を軸にカッターを効果的に織り交ぜた。キレのあるスプリットとブレーキングボールも投げていた。３イニングの中で本当に素晴らしい投球を見せた。」と田中投手を褒めた。

田中投手の次回の登板は、現地時間８日（日）のブレーブス戦となっている。

The Cincinnati Reds had an exhibition game vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers on March 2 local time. The Reds outfielder, Shogo Akiyama started the game as a lead-off hitter and center fielder. 


Akiyama went 1-for-2 with a walk and improved his batting average to .286. He coolly walked in his first at-bat when the dodger’s pitcher was former Cy Young Award, David Price and hit an infield single on a ground ball to second baseman Gavin Lux, deflected by pitcher Ryan Moseley in his second at-bat. This game’s final at-bat was his third at-bat in which he sharply batted, but grounded out, third baseman Justin Turner.


About defense, the 31-year-old well handled all opportunities to play. Especially Enrique Hernandez of Los Angeles hit a single to center fielder Akiyama and Hernandez outed at second by throwing quickly from Akiyama to second baseman Derek Dietrich.

レッズの秋山翔吾選手が、現地時間、3月２日、ドジャースとのエキシビジョンマッチに１番センターで先発出場した。

秋山選手は、打撃の方は２打数１安打１四球で打率を.２８６に上げた。第１打席では、今季レッドソックスからドジャースに移籍した元サイ・ヤング賞左腕のデビッド・プライス投手だったが、冷静に四球で出塁した。第２打席は、ライアン・モーズリー投手を強襲する内野安打。第３打席は三塁ゴロだったが、当たりは良かった。



守備では全ての守備機会を無難にこなした。特に３回にドジャースのエンリケ・ヘルナンデス選手がセンター前ヒットで２塁を狙ったが、秋山選手がセカンドのデレク・ディートリック選手に好返球し、アウトにした。

The Chicago Cubs pitcher, Yu Darvish, made his Cactus League debut this spring season. The Chicago Cubs had an exhibition match against the Milwaukee Brewers at Sloan Park, Arizona on February 29 local time. 

As a starter, the righty escaped the first inning without any run after he was hit a homer by the Brewers lead-off batter, Orlando Arcia. The 33-year-old stably had no runs in the second inning. 

This day, he gave up just one run(one ER) and 2 hits, having three strikeouts in two frames. 

Darvish tried his six pitches like a four-seam fastball, two-seam fastball, cutter, hard cutter, slider, and Knuckle-curveball in the game. 

 “I have to make sure my routine is right.” He said, “I’ve shown my power curve over my nine years here, and no one has hit well against that pitch,” Darvish said. “So, I can show it any time I want.” So, he looked satisfied. 

Also, his fastball sat at 94-96 mph and topped out at 98 mph. He totally had good pitching with his wide array of pitches.

カブスのダルビッシュ・有投手が、今季のカクタスリーグで初登板した。シカゴ・カブスは、現地時間２月２９日、アリゾナ州スローンパークでミルウォーキー・ブルワーズとエキシビジョンマッチを行った。

先発したダルビッシュ投手は、初回、先頭打者のオーランド・アルシアに本塁打を浴びたものの、その後は無失点で切り抜けた。２回は三者凡退に抑え、危なげない投球を見せた。

この日、ダルビッシュ投手は２イニングスを投げて、１本塁打を含む被安打２、自責点１、３奪三振の結果だった。

ダルビッシュ投手は、「自分のルーティンが正しいことを確かめたかった」と６球種を試した。さらに、「９年間（投げてきた）パワーカーブを見せた。誰も上手く打つことはできなかった。いつでも投げたいときに投げることができる」とカーブに満足気な様子だった。

またストレートの球速は、平均して１５１キロ−１５５キロで最速は１５８キロをマーク。多彩な球種で好投を見せた。

The Blue Jays righty, Shun Yamaguchi, took the second plate in the Grapefruit League. The Toronto Blue Jays had an exhibition match with the Philadelphia Phillies at TD ball park, Florida on February 29 local time. 

Yamaguchi could not escape the first inning last time. But, he could improve much this time. The 32-years-old, allowed just one run, 2 hits, a walk, and had 3 strikeouts in three frames as a starter. 

After the game, Yamaguchi commented, “I wanted to focus on throwing fastballs, lower outside,” Yamaguchi said. “Then, after getting two strikes or ahead in the count, I wanted to throw a splitter. Those are things that I spoke with [catcher Danny] Jansen about before the game.” 

The Japanese pitcher seemed to throw as planned today.

ブルージェイズの山口俊投手がグレープフルーツリーグで２回目の先発登板を果たした。トロント・ブルージェイズは、現地時間２月２９日に、フロリダ州のTDボールパークでフィラデルフィア・フィリーズとエキシビジョンマッチを行った。

前回先発して１イニングを持たなかった山口俊投手だったが、今回は、本領を発揮した。この日は、３イニングを投げて、被安打２、四球１、失点１。三振は３つ奪った。

試合後、山口投手は、「アウトコース低めの速球に拘った。２ストライクと追い込んでからは、スプリッターを投げたかった。試合前にキャッチャーのダニー・ジャンセンとそう話していた」と話し、想定通りの投球ができたようだった。

参考）山口投手は、NPB１４シーズンで、４２７試合に登板。６４勝５８敗１１２セーブ、防御率３.７５の成績を残している。

Seattle Mariners pitcher, Yusei Kikuchi, took the mound in his second game. The Mariners had an exhibition match against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Salt River Fields, Arizona on February 28 local time. 


As a stater, the 28-year-old, allowed just one hit, a walk, and an ER and had a strikeout in 2.1 frames with a 45-pitch. He sat at 94-96 mph with his fastball and his slider which was his issue last time, was much improved today. 


This season Kikuchi will be very important for their bullpen. It was good news that he improved his pitching especially his slider in a short period from last time.


Kikuchi said after the game, “The fastball felt great today and last time as well. My main focus was the slider and it was a great feeling today.”

試合後、菊池投手は、「今日は前回同様、ストレートの球速が良かった。今日の主な課題はスライダーだったが、それも良かった」と振り返った。
