Mariners Righty Yusei Kikuchi changes his form to Try 2nd Season
マリナーズの菊池雄星投手がフォームを変えて2年目に挑む

The Seattle Mariners lefty, Yusei Kikuchi threw 44 in the bullpen on February 16 local time at Peoria, Arizona. The Sports Hochi reported on February 17 JST. 

This year is his second season. In his rookie year of 2019, he went 6-11 with 5.46 ERA in his 32 game appearances which was an unsatisfactory performance. The Mariners, however, were in the last place in the American League West and the team’s condition was also terrible last season. It was hard for their pitchers to gain the number of wins. But, his ERA, 5.46 won’t be able to make an excuse. 

The righty spent much time in his training except taking ten days off during the off-season. Also, he has changed his pitching form about his taking-back to try to recover from a setback. 

The Chicago Cubs pitcher, Yu Darvish tweeted “It is great for him to change his taking back in a short period of the off-season.” 
Ichiro Suzuki, the Special Assistant to the chairman and instructor, was surprised by his today’s velocity which was 94 mph. 

He is hopeful of his success for the Mariners this season, who is under the team rebuilding.

シアトル・マリナーズの菊池雄星投手が、現地時間２月１６日、ブルペンで４４球を投球した。スポーツ報知が伝えている。

菊池投手は昨年メジャー１年目で、３２試合に登板して、６勝１１敗、防御率５.４６とメジャーの洗礼を浴びた。ただし、公平に見ると、勝ち星についてはチームが最下位に沈んだ状態もあるが、防御率５点台は言い訳しづらい数字だ。

そんな菊池投手は、オフは１０日間しか休まず、トレーニングに費やしたという。また、フォームも大胆に修正し、今季の巻き返しを図るつもりだ。

このフォームを観た、シカゴ・カブスのダルビッシュ有投手は、自身のTwitterで、「去年のシーズン終わりからこの短期間でここまでテークバックを変えられるってマジですごい。どれだけ考えて、練習したらこうなるんや。。」と驚くほどだ。

また球速は凡そ１５１キロを計測し、ピッチングを見守ったイチロー氏もこの時期のそのスピードに驚いていた。

チーム再建中のマリナーズにとって、今季、菊池投手の活躍が期待される。
