MLB Season to Be Delayed by at Least Two Weeks
MLBが開幕日の２週間延期を決定

Major League Baseball announced on March 12, local time that the opening day of the 2020 regular season will be delayed by at least two weeks and the remaining spring training games have been also canceled because of the new coronavirus outbreak. The original schedule of the opening day was March 26. The 2020 World Baseball Classic Qualifier games in Tucson, Arizona have been postponed indefinitely as well. The announcement was made after MLB and its teams had a telephone conference. 


I think these actions of MLB will be inevitable for prioritizing the safety of the players, staff, and fans. But, it will be fluid for MLB to start safely two weeks later from the original opening date amid the state of emergencies in several states. 


According to the Web site of Johns Hopkins University, the number of confirmed cases has been increasing with a focus on West and East Coasts in the US. As of 13:34 pm JST, total confirmed cases are 1663 and death cases are 40 all over the US.

メジャーリーグベースボールは、現地時間３月１２日、新型コロナウィルスの拡大を受けて、開幕日を少なくとも２週間遅らせること及び残りのオープン戦の中止を発表した。MLBのオーナー会議が１２日に行われて、決定された。また、アリゾナ州で行われる予定だったワールドベースボールクラシック予選も延期されることも併せて発表された。


今回の措置は選手、球団、ファンの健康を最優先した結果ゆえ、やむ得ない決定と考える。
しかし、できるだけ早く通常のシーズンに戻れるよう検討するとのことだが、米国でも複数の州で非常事態宣言が発令される現状において、開幕日の２週間の延期自体も流動的だ。


ジョンホプキンス大学のサイトによると、米国では西海岸、東海岸を中心に感染者の広がりを見せており、日本時間１３：３４現在、１，６６３名の感染者、死者は、ワシントン州で３１名、カリフォルニア州で４名、フロリダ州で２名、ジョージア州、ニュージャージー州、サウスダコタ州で各１名の合計４０名が確認されている。
