Ohtani Generation’s Fujinami Starts Well
大谷世代の藤浪投手が好調なスタート

Japanese popular team, the Hanshin Tigers, Today(Feb 9), had a practice match vs. the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters at Ginoza, in Okinawa prefecture. The Tigers’ well-known pitcher, Shintaro Fujinami, gathered attention for his condition. 

Fujinami graduated from the Osaka Toin High school having a high-ranking baseball club with which he won both the spring and summer’s national wide High school baseball tournaments held in the Koshien stadium as a ace pitcher. 

In Japan, High school baseball as well as professional baseball is a very popular sport. Playing in the Koshien stadium is a big dream for the players among which winning both tournaments is a brilliant achievement. 

The 25-years-old righty joined the Hanshin Tigers as its first round draft pick player in 2012. The hopeful pitcher make a professional debut in 2013, and since then, he had his double-digits wins for three years in a row. However, his weak point was his control because he recorded the worst Hit-by-pitch and base-on-balls in the Central League in 2015. His fastballs to right-handed-hitters have been especially getting worse since that time. He, therefore, had only a game appearance last season. 

Fujinami followed Masahiro Yamamoto, who was a notable pitcher with the Chunichi Dragons, as his coach during fall training after regular season. He worked hard on changing his form with Yamamoto. 

Today, the struggling pitcher had no hit and no run in 2 frames as a starter. His fastest ball velocity was about 98 mph (157km/h). He totally pitched well. 

Since his joining in professional field as a amazingly hopeful player, he went 50-40 with a 3.25 ERA whose records are unsatisfying. Many fans would have though that he would became a Major Leaguer in several years in Japan. 

This season is his back to the wall. He is the same age as the Los Angeles Angels Star, Shohei Ohtani, who used to be his rival. I hope that Fujinami will succeed this season, if possible, more than Ohtani.

大谷世代の藤浪投手が好調なスタート

今日、沖縄県宜野座で阪神タイガースは、北海道日本ハムファイターズと練習試合を行なった。その中で注目されたのは藤浪慎太郎投手の状態だ。

藤浪投手は、高校野球の名門、大阪桐蔭高校出身で、高校時代、エース投手として甲子園春夏連覇を達成した。日本ではプロ野球と並んで、高校野球も人気スポーツで、甲子園の春夏連覇はとてつもない偉業だ。

現在、２５歳の右投手の藤浪投手は２０１２年に阪神にドラフト１位で入団した。プロデビューした２０１３年から3年連続二桁勝利をあげる一方で、２０１５年には与四死球ともにリーグワーストを記録するなどして２０１６年頃からコントロールを中心に不調に陥った。右打者に抜ける直球で四死球が増加し、２０１９年には一軍出場は1試合のみというところまで悪化していった。

昨秋のキャンプでは、元中日のエース左腕の山本昌広氏をコーチに仰ぎ、ピッチングフォームの改善に務めてきた。

今日、行われた試合では、藤浪投手は２回を投げて、無安打２四球の無失点。最速は１５７キロを記録し、好投を見せた。

プロ野球界期待の星として入団して以降、7年間の成績は、１２８試合に登板し、５０勝４０敗防御率３.２５と物足りなさが残る。多くのファンは日本で５、６年したら、メジャーリーガーになるだろうと思っていただろう。

背水の陣として挑む、今シーズン、ライバルの大谷投手より活躍してもらいたいと願っている。
