U18-W-CUP: Japan with first loss in opening round vs. Taiwan, 2-9

Japan lost the final opening round game against Chinese Taipei, 2-9, at Ed Smith Stadium in the 30th WBSC U18 Baseball World Cup on September 14, JST / September 13 EST in Florida, the United States. Japan advances to the super round as the second-place team in group B. 

Japanese starting lefty Kazuki Kozai allowed a hit, two walks, and early left the mound in a bases-loaded situation with two outs, struggling to find the international strike zone in the second. Right-handed pitcher Haruya Miyahara, who went out to pitch, gave up a three-run triple to left-center field by Taiwanese ninth batter ZHENG J.W. and an RBI single to right field by first batter CHIU H. 

Taiwan got four more runs with two doubles and Japan's errors in the third. Japan lost out to Taiwan in the struggle by early-eight runs.

Japan had a run with an RBI single to center field that Hotaka Mitsuhiro hit in the fifth. Japanese sixth batter Kaito Ito hit a middle-infield single with an RBI in the sixth. However, Japan could not stage a comeback anymore. 

Japanese batters could not handle Taiwanese starting righty LIN S.E, who threw a 92-mph fastball, and WU Y.C, who relieved LIN. 

Japan had a win-loss record of 4-1 and advanced to the super round as a second-place team in group B of the opening league after Taiwan, which had four consecutive wins and no losses before its final game vs. Panama.

日本、オープニングラウンド発黒星

第３０回WBSC U１８ベースボールワールドカップに参加している日本代表は、日本時間１４日、米国フロリダ州でオープニングラウンド最終戦を台湾と戦い、２−９で敗れた。日本は４勝１敗の2位でスーパーラウンド進出となった。

先発した左腕の香西がストライクゾーンの調整に苦しみ安打と２四球で２死満塁としで早々と降板。リリーフした右腕の宮原が台湾の９番ZHENG J.Wに左中間を破る適時三塁打を浴び３点を失った。続く１番のCHIU Hにも右前適時打を許し、この回合計４失点。

３回にも宮原は流れをつかんだ台湾打線につかまり、２塁打２本に２つの失策も重なり４点を献上。序盤で８点差がつく苦しい展開になった。

日本は５回、先頭の６番伊藤が左中間破る２塁打で出塁し、８番光弘の中前適時打で１点を返した。６回にも２死１、３塁から伊藤が二遊間への適時内野安打を放ち１点を追加したが反撃もここまでだった。日本は、この試合最速１４８キロを投げ、力のある速球を操る台湾の先発LIN S.Eと２番手のWU Y.Cを最後まで攻略できなかった。

昨日までに４連勝した日本はすでにスーパーラウンド進出を決めているが、日本戦の勝利で４連勝となった台湾がパナマ戦を残しグループBの１位通過が決定。日本は２位での通過となった。
