2023 WBC: Star player VOL.5: Pete Alonso, New York Mets' slugger, "rookie's home run king," Possible player to join the USA

Today's player is the New York Mets' slugger Pete Alonso, who can be a member of the USA in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

The New York Mets selected Pete Alonso in the second round with the 64th pick overall of the 2016 MLB Draft.

He made his Major League debut in 2019 when he surprisingly marked a batting average of .260 with 53 home runs and 120 RBIs for the most RBIs by a rookie in Major League history, receiving the National League(NL) Rookie of the Year and home run leader.

The two-time All-Star became the third player to win back-to-back All-Star Home Run Derbys in 2021. 

The 27-year-old hard hitter had 37 homers in 2021 and 40 shots in 2022, respectively, ranked third in the league.

This season Alonso picked up 131 RBIs to lead the league and set a new single-season franchise record. His batting is stable to have been ranked higher in the main batting categories since his debut.
