Haniger is making up his mind to return to the ground. MLB.COM reported on February 21, local time. The outfielder has been without the team because of repeated injuries from June 6 when he ruptured a testicle on a foul ball. After surgery, he had a back issue with a torn adductor muscle. In January, he felt acute pain and could not walk. The 29-year-old underwent surgery to repair the adductor muscle attachment in Philadelphia. When starting his rehabilitation, he finally felt back pain in his lumbar area and went through surgery again in Los Angeles. Haniger has totally had four-time surgery since last June and has to recover from those issues. The 2018 All-Star nominee is aiming at recovering during this season. Haniger, who is one of the serious players in the Mariners, would be building up frustration with many physical accidents. However, he positively said, “I’m excited to see what level I can be at, now that I’m fixed and starting this healing process. I think I’m going to be better than ever when I get back on the field. And he hopes to come back during this year. Severino appeared in only three games because of his right shoulder injury last regular season. Since their MRIs and CT scan did not find any serious findings during this winter. The pain could be a new injury. Yankees general manager, Brian Cashman still doesn’t know its details presently. When his condition can be showed depends on a medical examination. The 25-year-old had a four-year deal worth $40 million to extend his contract for which the Yankees is strongly expecting the righty this season. He made his MLB debut in 2015 and he won double-digit victories in both 2017 and 2018 to act as an ace level of New York. Yankees starting rotation would have included Gerrit Cole from the Astros, Masahiro Tanaka, Luis Severino as the third, J.A. Harp, and Jordan Montgomery before the Severino issue. Light-handed pitcher, James Paxton, who had spinal surgery in February, could come back to the rotation in May or June. Its purpose will be to explain the backbone of the trade and calm the big fan’s anger. The points I am thinking of in the statement is that the Red Sox understand the fan’s feeling to hold the star player, Mookie Betts and they evaluated Betts so highly. However, the players can have the right of free agent to maximize their valuation and salary. Clubs in Major League are under total salary volume control. The clubs need to manage to win World Series while considering those elements. The Betts’ trade seemed to be a very hard decision to make for the Red Sox. About the trade, the Boston Herald reported on February 17, local time that the first reason was “receiving significant value” of Betts. The total salary volume control was not the main reason. According to the Boston Herald, John Henry said that his team made appropriate offers over three off-seasons to stay in the club although Betts wanted to receive a proper evaluation in the free-agent market. Henry didn’t show any negotiation details. But, he seemed not to give Betts up. He said, “We wanted to see him in a Red Sox uniform for the rest of his life if possible.” Also, Boston president Sam Kennedy commented, “Mookie and his representatives definitely knew of our desire to try to make Mookie Betts part of our Red Sox family for life,” but “He leaves Boston.” When Betts becomes a free agent next off-season, would you bring him back to Boston? MLB.com reported on the same day. Astros third baseman Alex Bregman and Second baseman Jose Altuve read statements with words of apology as players. Alex Bregman; “I am really sorry about the choices that were made by my team, by the organization and by me. I’ve learned from this and I hope to regain the trust of baseball fans. I would also like to thank the Astros fans for all of their support. We, as a team, are totally focused on moving forward to the 2020 season.” Jose Altuve; “We had a great team meeting last night. I want to say that the whole Astros organization and the team feel bad about what happened in 2017. We especially feel remorse for the impact on our fans and the game of baseball. Our team is determined to move forward, to play with intensity and to bring back a championship to Houston in 2020.” Also, Houston owner, Jim Crane promised not to repeat the mistake again under his surveillance and told the front office had to change their minds. Then, Crane said, “We don’t endorse the actions that took place,” he said. “We’ve apologized. It’s been tough on the team, tough on the city and tough on the nation. I don’t disagree with that. The only thing we can do is sit here and say, ‘We’re sorry.’ We’re going to move forward in a positive way. You can count on us to be a positive force in delivering that message.” In response to this, MLB commissioner, Rob Manfred commented, “I think it’s important for the front office, the players to take responsibility for what happened and express remorse about it to the fans, the other teams and people who are really invested in our great game.” The press interview will be an event to smoothly start their spring camp and the 2020 season. But, it was very unfortunate for baseball fans and other teams that their apologies were extremely late. They, moreover, should have expressed their remorse by their own words to persuade people, but not read the statements.

MLBが考える新たなプレーオフ案とは？ MLB is considering the change of playoff format. The New York Post reported on February 10, Monday local time that it wants to expand the number of the playoff participating teams from five to seven. By adding two more teams to the playoff, it is trying to make a wild card round. The team with the top winning rate can automatically go to the Division Series. The two other division leaders and the club with the top wild card record can go to the wild card round. The three teams get an advantage to have games at home. The other wild card round participation clubs will be the clubs with the second, third, and fourth wild card records. Also, the division winner with the second-best record can name their opponent among the clubs with the second, third, and fourth wild card records. The remaining division winner can name their opponent among the remaining teams without a club the division winner with the second-best record has named. The club with the top wild card record has a game against the remaining team. And the scene to make game matches about the wild card round will broadcast on television. It could be complicated to understand. I’d like to exemplify the American League regular season’s result of last season. Please refer to Table 1.  Firstly, the Astros as the best winning rate’s team would have gone to division series automatically. The other six teams would have gone to the wild card round before the division series. The Yankees of rank 2 and Twins of rank 3 would have had each home advantage and the right to name their opponent from Rank 5 - 7. The Athletics of rank 4 would have had their home advantage only. For example, the Yankees would have named the Indians of rank 6 as their opponent to avoid their rival Red Sox. Then, the Twins would have named the Rays of rank 5 because the Red Sox was the 2018 World Series Champion. The Athletics would have had the Red Sox as their opponent as a result. Each game format is the best of three. Each winner would have gone to the division series. Those scenes to make game matches about the wild card round would have broadcasted on television. The reasons why MLB wants to change the playoff format are; ・To Increase spectators ・To reduce dead rubbers ・To attract baseball fans and media ・To increase broadcasting rights fees Any change in the playoff format needs to be agreed with the union. MLBが考える新たなプレーオフ案とは？ MLBがプレーオフのあり方を模索している。ニューヨークポストが現地時間２月１０日に伝えたところによると、プレーオフ進出チーム数を現行の５から７に増加させることを真剣に検討しているようだ。 提案内容は以下の通り。ワイルドカードチーム数を増加させて、地区シリーズ進出をかけたラウンドを設けるというシステムだ。例えば、各リーグ各地区優勝チームのうち、最も勝率の高いチームは自動的に地区シリーズ進出が決定する。 残りの地区優勝２チームとワイルドカードチーム勝率１位のチーム（よって合計３チーム）は、ワイルドカードラウンドのホストチームとなる。いわば、ワイルドカードラウンドのホームアドバンテージを得ることができる。 そしてこのワイルドカードラウンドに参加できるチームは上述の３チームに加えて、残りの１１チームで勝率の高い３チームが参加資格を得る。さらにワイルドカードラウンドの組み合わせは、地区優勝２チームのうち、勝率の高いチームから順にワイルドカード勝率５位、６位、７位のチームを指名することができ、各組合せで最大３試合で２勝したチームが地区シリーズに進出できる。この組み合わせ決定をテレビ中継で放映するという仕組みだ。 少しわかりづらいので、昨シーズンのアメリカンリーグのレギュラーシーズンの結果に基づいてシミュレーションしてみよう。表１（Table 1）を参考にして欲しい。 まず、各地区優勝チームは、勝率順に１位西地区・アストロズ、２位東地区・ヤンキース、３位中地区・ツインズで、ワイルドカード勝率トップはアスレチックス（仮に４位とする）だ。 従って、地区優勝チームの中で勝率１位のアストロズは自動的に地区シリーズ進出が決定する。上記の残り、３チームとワイルドカードでアスレチックスに次ぐ勝率のレイズ（仮に５位とする）、インディアンズ（仮に６位とする）、レッドソックス（仮に７位とする）までをワイルドカード進出チームとして増加させる。 ワイルドカードの組み合わせとして、仮に２位のヤンキースが、５位から７位の３チームの中から対戦相手としてライバルと言われるレッドソックスを回避し、インディアンスを指名するとする。次に３位のツインズが残りの２チームから対戦相手として、レイズを指名する。レッドソックスは昨年度の優勝チームなので回避した。残ったチーム、ここではレッドソックスと４位のアスレチックスが対戦するという仕組みだ。試合はそれぞれ、シードされる２位から４位のチームのホームで行われる。３戦中２戦先勝したチームがディビジョンシリーズに進出する。この組み合わせ決定シーンをテレビ中継するというものだ。 こういったプレーオフ改革が検討される理由としては、MLBは観客動員数の減少対策、消化試合の減少、ファンやテレビの関心の引き寄せ効果、放映権料の増加などを挙げている。 こういった変更は早ければ２０２２年から開始したい意向だが、ユニオンとの契約合意が必要とされている。 ⚾️ KAISPO Baseball Innovation❗️;
