Tsutsugo Making His Debut with a Sharp Single 
筒香嘉智選手が痛烈なヒットでデビュー

Major League’s exhibition matches have started. The Rays outfielder, Yoshitomo Tsutsugo, who is one of the three Japanese players, who have joined MLB this year, made a debut in American baseball. 

The Rays had the first exhibition game against the Yankees at Charlotte Sports Park, Florida on February 23 local time. 

Tsutsugo started the game as batting fifth and left fielder. He had his first at-bat at one out without any runner in the second inning and hit a single on a sharp ground ball to center field, deflected by pitcher David Hale. It was his first hit in America. 

Tsutsugo walked to make sure of nasty balls in his second at-bat in the fourth inning and Pinch-runner Dylan Cozens replaced him. Finally, he went 1-for-1 today.  

The Rays manager, Kevin Cash commented about Tsutsugo, 
“Good for Yoshi to get on base, get the hit and he looked comfortable in left field,” said Rays manager Kevin Cash. “If he would’ve gone 0-for-2, we wouldn’t have felt any different about him, so 1-for-1 with a walk doesn’t change much. But for him, you always want guys to have a little bit of success and enjoy it, and I think he did.”

The Japanese slugger said of looking back on the game, “I think there’s a difference in the strike zone in the two countries, and also I was seeing different velocity here. This is the first game and I wanted to see it with my own eyes.” Also, he said, “We’re still a few weeks away from the beginning of the season, so I think there’s still a lot of difference that I need to verify with my own eyes,” Tsutsugo said. “Just try and learn as much as I can before the beginning of the season.”

The 28-years-old would have about 45-50 at-bats. He will play as a designated hitter in a game vs. Red Sox on Monday.

この日、レイズはフロリダ州のシャーロット・スポーツ・パークでヤンキースとのエキシビジョンマッチ初戦を迎えた。筒香選手は、２回無死一塁から、第一打席で、ピッチャーのグラブをゴロで弾いてセンター前に抜けるヒットを放ち、アメリカ初打席を初安打で飾った。


第２打席は、際どいボールをしっかり見極めて四球を選んだ。今日はここでピンチランナーを送られて、退いた。

レイズのケビン・キャッシュ監督は、「ヨシがヒットで出塁したのは良かった。レフトの守備も良かったようだ。もし、１打数１安打でも２打数無安打だったとしても、評価は変わらない。少しの成功を楽しんでもらいたかった。それができた。」と話した。


今日の試合を振り返って、筒香選手は、「日本とアメリカでストライクゾーンに違いがあると思う。球速も違う。最初の試合で自分の目でそれを見たかった。」さらに、「開幕まであと数週間ある。自分の目で（アメリカと日本の）違いを確認する必要がある。できる限り、それにトライして、学びたい」とコメントした。


筒香選手は開幕までに４５から５０打席を想定しており、次回は同じくシャーロット・スポーツ・パークでのレッドソックス戦にDHで出場する予定だ。
