The 21-year-old Nicaraguan pitcher pitched the ninth inning of a game against the Dominican Republic on March 13, 2023, in the 2023 spring classic, striking out Juan Soto, Julio Rodriguez, and Rafael Devers. The Detroit Tigers were so impressed with this accomplishment that they offered Hebbelt a minor league contract after the game. After striking out Soto and Rodriguez, Hebbelt allowed a double to Manny Machado, who also homered in the game. Hebert struck out Devers immediately after with a changeup. “Pitcher Sandoval is a promising young starting lefty who is on the rise. He emerged from the 2021 season with a 3.62 ERA in 87 innings pitched, and in 2022 he became a fixture in the Angels' starting rotation, posting six wins (nine losses) and a 2.91 ERA in 27 starts. With the support of his bullpen and hitting staff, he would have had double-digit wins. In the two years since his debut in 2019, there were cases where he was hit mainly with the 4-seam. In 2021, he increased the distribution of changeups and sliders whose opponent's batting averages were low to have more options to retire batters he faced. Also, the lefty came to upset the batter's timing with a 0.48 HR/9 in 2022. ■Today’s player Today's player is the San Diego Padres pitcher Nick Martinez. Martinez is from Miami, Florida, and has played for Team USA in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. ■The KAISPO's baseball analyst comments Martinez is a utility pitcher who can both relieve and start. In 2022, he made ten starts and 37 relief appearances, showing his coordination and agility with a 4-4 record, eight holds, eight saves, and a 3.47 ERA. He will likely pitch more frequently as a starter in 2023, but his 4-seamer will be challenging. It has the most pitches (26.3%) of his five pitches, but its OBA is high at .351, and Whiff% is low at 18.1%. His 4-seamer's average velocity of 93.4 mph (about 150 km/h) is almost the same as that of MLB. So it would be considered more accessible for hitters to contact, so a more precise command is required. Conversely, his changeup is distributed at about the same rate as the 4-seamer and has a high whiff%. He joined the Padres as a free agent in March 2022 and made his Padre debut on April 11, 2022. Martinez appeared in 47 games for the team during the 2022 season, including ten starts. He recorded a 4-4 record with a 3.47 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 106.1 innings pitched. Martinez primarily served as a long reliever out of the bullpen but also made a few spot starts when needed. Before joining the Padres, the right-hander played in the Texas Rangers organization for several years, making his MLB debut with the Rangers in 2014. He also pitched for the Hokkaido Nippoham Fighters of the Japanese Pacific League in 2018 and 2020 and the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks in 2021 before returning to the United States to sign with the Padres. ■MLB Career Stats At the end of the 2022 season, the 32-year-old has logged 21-34 with a 4.50 ERA and 332 strikeouts over 135 games(78 starts) in 521.2 innings in his five big league campaigns.
