Red Sox Issued A Statement to Explain Betts’ Trade
レッドソックスがムーキー・ベッツ選手のトレードを説明する声明を発表

The Boston Red Sox owner, John Henry has issued a long statement regarding Mookie Betts trade to the Los Angeles Dodgers on February 17, Monday local time. Its purpose will be to explain the backbone of the trade and calm the big fan’s anger. 

The points I am thinking of in the statement is that the Red Sox understand the fan’s feeling to hold the star player, Mookie Betts and they evaluated Betts so highly. However, the players can have the right of free agent to maximize their valuation and salary. Clubs in Major League are under total salary volume control. 
The clubs need to manage to win World Series while considering those elements. 

The Betts’ trade seemed to be a very hard decision to make for the Red Sox. 

About the trade, the Boston Herald reported on February 17, local time that the first reason was “receiving significant value” of Betts. The total salary volume control was not the main reason.

According to the Boston Herald, John Henry said that his team made appropriate offers over three off-seasons to stay in the club although Betts wanted to receive a proper evaluation in the free-agent market. Henry didn’t show any negotiation details. But, he seemed not to give Betts up. He said, “We wanted to see him in a Red Sox uniform for the rest of his life if possible.”

Also, Boston president Sam Kennedy commented, “Mookie and his representatives definitely knew of our desire to try to make Mookie Betts part of our Red Sox family for life,” but “He leaves Boston.”

When Betts becomes a free agent next off-season, would you bring him back to Boston? Kennedy didn’t answer straightly.

But, Kennedy said, “We can’t talk about a player with another organization but if you look back to 2002, the Red Sox have been in the top five of payroll. This club will have a payroll at or above $200 million. These guys have never, ever shied away from spending when appropriate, when strategic, for trying to win in October.”

In Major League whose free-agent market is very aggressive, franchise player, who played for only one team in his MLB career, is getting rare. Betts was one of such players. We can not know how they had the negotiation, but, there would have been a concern about the regulation of total salary in the Red Sox, who wanted to respond to Betts’ wish. Actually, Boston paid $12 million as a “competitive balance tax” last year. 

There are complicated circumstances behind the trade, which is getting more complicated to add fan psychology here. 

Each time the clubs have a franchise star, they have to deal with high-level decision making.

ボストン・レッドソックスのオーナー、ジョン・ヘンリー氏が、現地時間２月１７日に今回のムーキー・ベッツ選手のロサンゼルス・ドジャースへのトレードに関する背景を説明する長い声明を発表した。レッドソックスのスターだったベッツ選手のトレードがファンからの批判を鎮めることが目的とみられる。

私が感じた長きに渡る声明のポイントは、多くのファンがベッツ選手をレッドソックスに残して欲しかった点を理解しているとした上で、チームとしてベッツ選手を高く評価している一方で、選手はフリーエージェントという権利を活用して自己の評価と年俸を最大化することができること。またメジャー球団は、規定された年俸総額に抑える必要があること。こういったことを念頭に戦略的に思慮深く考えながら、チームはワールドチャンピオンを目指している、と言うことだ。

今回のトレードも苦渋の決断だったように見えるが、これに関し、ボストン・ヘラルド紙では、現地時間２月１７日夕方、レッドソックスは、今回のベッツ選手のトレードに関して、いわゆる給料の総量規制がメインの理由ではなく、ベッツ選手の重大な価値評価を受けることが一義的な目的であると伝えている。

記事によると、ジョン・ヘンリーオーナーは、チームは、フリーエージェント市場で市場価値を得たい意向のように見えたベッツ選手に対して、3年間に渡り、ベッツ選手を引き止めるために正当なオファーをしたようだ。交渉の詳細は明かさなかったものの、手放したくはなかったのは事実のようだ。言うなれば、「可能なら生涯、レッドソックスのユニフォーム姿の彼をみたかった」と話した。

また、球団社長のサム・ケネディ氏は、「ムーキー選手と代理人は我々が生涯、彼をレッドソックスファミリーの一員に居させたいと言う願いは確実にわかっていた」が、「チームを去ってしまった」と語った。

しかしながら、ベッツ選手が次のオフでフリーエージェントとなった場合に、チームに戻すかと言う質問に対し、ケネディ氏は直接的に答えなかったものの、次のようにコメントした。

「他チームの選手のことは話すことはできない。しかし、２００２年に目を向けるならば、レッドソックスは給与額上位５位に入っていた。我々は２億ドル以上の給与を持つことになるだろう。我々は、適切な時に、戦略的に、１０月（ワールドシリーズ）に勝つために支出を削ったりは決してしない」と話した。

フリーエージェント市場が活発なメジャーリーグにおいて、生涯一つの球団一筋と言ういわゆる「フランチャイズプレーヤー」は益々少なくなっている。ベッツ選手はその可能性の高い選手だった。両者の間でどのような交渉が行われたかは知り得ないが、私が上述したように、ベッツ選手の要求に応える上でチームの給与の総量規制に対する懸念があったのは間違い無いだろう。実際に、レッドソックスは、昨年も約１２００万ドルの「贅沢税」を支払っている。こういった事情に熱烈なファン心理が加わると確かに、複雑な様相を呈してくる。

メジャー球団は、生え抜きのスターが出てくる度に、避けて通ることができない選択を迫られる。
