 Astros Hire Their New GM, James Click from Rays
アストロズがレイズから新たなGMとしてジェームス・クリック氏を獲得

The Houston Astros have announced on February 3 Monday, local time that they have hired James Click as their new general manager, who was a Vice President of Baseball Operations of the Tampa Bay Rays. 

The Astros had had vacancies of a general manager and manager since January 13 when MLB imposed a punishment about a sign-cheating scandal in the 2017 Astros’ World Champion year that GM Jeff Luhnow and manager A.J. Hinch has been suspended for the whole 2020 season. Luhnow and A.J. Hinch were fired by the organization just after the MLB’s announcement on the penalties.

The Astros, who was seeking the two suitable parsonnels, invited Dusty Baker as their new manager last week and finally also have hired James Click as their new general manager this week. They avoided starting Spring Training from February 12 without the two importance positions.

Click is a Yale graduate and 40 years old, who joined the Rays’ front office. He acted as the Vice President for the previous three seasons and played various roles about baseball research, development, baseball system, clubhouse operation, departmental logistics. And also the 40-year-old widely supported player evaluation, roster configuration deployment, contract negotiation, and  staff management. 

About his joining, “I am excited to join the Astros family,” Click said in a statement. “The Astros are a progressive and innovative organization with a deeply talented group in the front office. I am grateful to Jim Crane and the Astros for giving me this opportunity to help lead this team to more championships.” According to MLB.com,

Tampa Bay is one of clubs on small budgets while Houston is one of clubs on big budgets. Although Tampa Bay is one of teams, who have succeeded in small budgets. It would depend on his abilities. 

Both Dusty Baker and James Click will ran into a problem, which is an image of the sigh-stealing team. As the manager and the GM, how both can lead the team or the front office? They are receiving a lot of attention from many baseball fans.

ヒューストン・アストロズが、現地時間2月3日（月）、タンパベイ・レイズの運営幹部（ヴァイス・プレジデント）のジェームス・クリック氏をゼネラルマネージャーとして招聘した、と発表した。
アストロズは、2017年のワールドチャンピオンイヤーでのサイン盗みで、1月13日にMLBから制裁を受け、ゼネラルマネージャーのルノーと監督だったヒンチに1年間の活動停止処分が下された為、両者を解雇していた。

その為、アストロズは監督とGMを探していたが、先週に監督として、ダスティ・ベーカー氏を迎え入れ、今回、GMはクリック氏に決定した。スプリングトレーニングが2月12日に迫る中、空席だった２つの重要なポジションが埋まった事になる。

新GMのジェームス・クリック氏はイェール大学卒業で現在40歳。2006年にレイズのフロントオフィスに入り、2017年から2019年まで運営幹部（ヴァイス・プレジデント）を務めた。レイズ在籍時は、その才能を活かし、リサーチ＆ディベロップメント、システム、クラブハウスオペレーション、ロジスティックスなどの幅広い職種をこなした。また、選手の評価や配置、契約交渉、スタッフマネジメントを補佐するなど、幅広く実力を発揮した。

アストロズの就任にあたって、MLB.comによると「アストロズに参画できて興奮しています。アストロズは積極的かつ革新的な球団で、フロントオフィスも素晴らしい能力を持っています。オーナーのジム・クレイン氏と球団を尊敬しており、この機会を与えて頂き、感謝しています。このチームをチャンピオンシップに導けるように努力します」と声明を発表した。

レイズは低予算のチームとして知られているが、近年成功したチームの一つ。その陰にクリック氏の存在が大きかったのは事実だろう。一方で、アストロズは潤沢な予算があるチームである。環境の変わった中で、またサイン盗みチームという評判がついた中でクリック氏とベーカー氏がどのような手腕を発揮していくか、注目が集まっている。
