The Cincinnati Reds outfielder, Shogo Akiyama, made his debut in Major League exhibition game on February 23, Sunday local time.

Akiyama started the game as the lead-off hitter and center fielder. He had a single as his first hit on a line drive to center field in the first inning. His second at-bat with 2 outs and the first and second runner was a ground-out to the second baseman in the second inning. Today’s final at-bat with 1 out and runners on the first and second base in the fourth inning grounded into a force-out, first baseman to shortstop. The first runner, Scott Schebler outed at second, but Akiyama reached the first. During the next hitter, Akiyama tried a stolen base to the second, but he caught stealing.

About his defense, he made two catches without difficulty.

After the game, the 31-year-old said about his hitting, “I was very nervous, but definitely relieved I got my first hit. It was also good that I was able to see a lot of balls.” About the stolen base, “It wasn’t a goal, but I just wanted to see if I could do it, to see if I had a chance,” Akiyama said. “It was good I was able to run it out.” He said.

The Reds manager, David Bell commented about Akiyama, “He looked great. He looked comfortable,” Reds manager David Bell said after Sunday’s game. “I know it’s just Spring Training, but it’s kind of nice to get a hit in your first at-bat just to kind of take the pressure off. I think he settled in pretty quick after that. He said he was nervous before the game.”

The first Japanese player with Reds will play on Tuesday vs. Los Angeles Angels and he will face Japanese star Shohei Ohtani.

秋山外野手は、ホワイトソックス戦で１番センターで先発出場した。初回の第一打席では、ライナー性のセンター前ヒットを放ち、初打席初安打を記録し、アピールした。２回の第二打席は、２死１、２塁の場面で、セカンドゴロに倒れた。４回の第三打席は、１死１、２塁の場面で迎えたがファーストゴロで１塁走者が２塁フォースアウトの間に１塁に出塁した。その後、２塁への盗塁を試みたが、惜しくもアウトになった。

守りでは２回の守備機会を無難にこなし、安定感を見せた。

試合後、秋山選手は打撃について、「とても緊張したが、初ヒットが出てほっとした。多くのボールを見ることができて良かった。」と振り返った。また盗塁については、「（今日の）ゴールではなかったが、チャンスがあればやってみたかった。走れたことが良かった」とコメントした。

また、デビッド・ベル監督は、「彼は素晴らしかったし、心地よくやっていたように見えた。スプリング・トレーニングとはいえ、安打が１本出たのは良かった。彼は試合前に緊張していたと言っていたが、そうは見えなかった。」と今日のプレーについてコメントした。

秋山選手は、現地時間２５日火曜日に予定されるエンジェルスとの試合に出場する予定で、大谷翔平選手と会うことになるだろう。
