 Astros Having Dusty Baker as their New Manager

The Houston Astros has agreed to a two-year deal for managerial job with Dusty Baker. Plural media reported on January 30, ET.

The Astros, which has made a disturbance on a sign-stealing scandal, have chosen the 70-year-old veteran, who had played in the Major for 19 years and managed four teams for 22 consecutive years. He is like a walking dictionary in Major League Baseball.

Apart from the scandal, the Astros could be one of the frontrunners with data baseball. It is very interesting that such a technological team has Baker, who will be an old-fashioned manager.

The Houston is using SAS, which is a data analysis system. I am sure that how to do with it is a business secret. But, the team would be a top-level about utilizing data in the MLB. I am very excited by what kind of chemical reaction is happening between the team and the veteran, who has watched a change of Major League Baseball for many years.

Also, a job that is assigned to Baker would not just the managerial one. The bashing to Astros organization and the players from the opponent’s fans and media will be expected during this season. Although the team has many young talents, their mental strains can be worried in such a situation. The existence of Baker as a manager may make sense. I think he will be able to handle them well.

The Astros’ scandal should not be allowed because Major League Baseball is a children’s dream. They, however, need to prove clearly that they have been strong, even without the sign-cheating. They have to become World champion again for that this season.

When a collaboration between the Astros and the veteran manager goes to seed, the scandal might truly start ending.

今冬、サイン盗みスキャンダルで揺れているアストロズが70歳の大ベテラン監督を選んだ。ベーカー氏は、メジャーで19年間活躍し、引退後は22年間連続で4チームを指揮したまさにメジャーの生き字引きだ。

一旦、サイン盗み事件のことは抜きにして考えると、アストロズはデータ野球の先端を行くチームと言っていい。そんな現代メジャーリーグ野球の中に、今回のオールドタイプのベーカー氏の監督就任は大変に興味深い。

アストロズは、データ分析システムで有名なSASを利用しているチームだ。もちろんどのように活用しているかは企業秘密だが、違反行為を抜きにしてチームを見ると、おそらくデータ活用においてはメジャーでもトップレベルにあると思われる。そんなチームをメジャーの変化を長く現場で見てきた70歳のベーカー氏が率いる訳で、どんな化学反応が起こるのか、非常にワクワクしている。

また、ベーカー氏に課せられた任務は単に監督業だけではない。今シーズンは、相手ファンや敵チーム、メディアからのバッシングが予想される。そんな状況の中で、どのようにチームや環境をマネージしていくかも重要になってくる。アストロズは若くて能力のある選手が多くいるが、バッシングを受ける環境下でのメンタルコントロールには不安がある。ここにベテラン監督としての存在感が必要になってくるだろう。ベーカー氏はそんな環境をうまく対処できるだろう。

メジャーリーグベースボールは子供達の夢であり、アストロズの行った行為は決して許されるべきものではない。しかし、サイン盗みをしなくても実力があったと証明するためには、今季、ワールドチャンピオンになることこそが絶対条件だ。

チームと大ベテランのコラボレーションが結実した時、真にこの騒動の終わりが始まるのかもしれない。
