Astros’ Managerial Candidate, Dusty Baker Goes to Houston to Meet The Owner

As a new manager candidate of the Houston Astros, which fired their manager and general manager amid a sign-stealing scandal, the name of Dusty Baker emerged. Some resources reported. 

Brian Mc Taggart of MLB.com introduced an interview with Baker on his twitter when he arrived an international airport in Houston on Jan 20 to meet the Astros’ Owner Jim Crane. According to the twitter,  he commented about the Astros, “They got a good team. They’ve always had a good team and I’ve enjoyed watching them to play and it would be a privilege and an honor to be the manager of this team.” 

Also, there has still been no contact from the Boston Red Sox and New York both which are seeking a new manager in the sake of the scandal. He continued to say positively, “Everybody likes to feel like they’re wanted and I talked to Mr. Crane and he made me feel that I was wanted here.”

The Astros seems to prefer an external manager to an internal one. I am sure that it is said at the eleventh hour that Houston’s star player, Jose Altuve might have stolen signs with wearable devices. To sweep any more suspicions, It is effective for the club to hire the external manager like baker. 

The seventy-year old played as an outfielder for the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics throughout his 19-year MLB career. He retired in 1986. His career hitting records were .278 with 242 homers. Also, he earned two All-Star Game nominations, two Silver Slugger Awards, and a Gold Glove Award. 

As respect to his managerial job, Baker managed for twenty-two years with four clubs such as the San Francisco Giants (’93-’02), Chicago Cubs (’03-’06), Cincinnati Reds (’08-’13) and Washington Nationals (’16-’17) in the past. In his skipper’s career, he had 1,863-1,636 and led the teams to NLCS seven times. The notable manager also took the cubs to the 2002 World Series, but failed to win. He, therefore, still has a dream to acquire WC title. 

The Astros is still amid the sign-stealing scandal. However, they have many good players like Altuve, Springer, Bregman, Greinke, and Verlander. There will be enough possibility to advance to the World Series this season without any stealing.

ヒューストン・アストロズの新監督候補に、ダスティ・ベイカー氏の名前が浮上している。アストロズはサイン盗み事件に絡んで、監督のAJヒンチとGMのルノーを解任している。

ベイカー氏は日曜日にアストロズと面談するためにヒューストン国際空港に到着した。その際のインタビュー内容をMLB.comのブライアン・マクタッガアート記者がTwitterで紹介している。
それによると、アストロズについて、「とても良いチーム。彼らのプレーを見て楽しんだ。このチームの監督になるのは光栄で名誉な事だ」と話した。また、同様に監督を探しているレッドソックスやメッツからのコンタクトは今のところ、ないと答え、「誰もがやりたい事をしたい。私は、オーナーのジム・クレイン氏と話したが、私の必要性を感じさせてくれた」と、監督就任に前向きなコメントを残した。

アストロズは、外部の監督候補の就任を望んでいるようだ。確かに、ここにきて、主力選手のホセ・アルツゥーべらに新たにウエラブルデバイスを着用してのサイン伝達疑惑も浮上している。これ以上の疑惑払拭のためには外部人材の登用の方が効果的かも知れない。

ダスティ・ベーカー氏は現在、７０歳で、現役時代は１９年間。アトランタブレーブスでデビュー後、ロサンゼルス・ドジャース、サンフランシスコ・ジャイアンツ、オークランド・アスレチックスで外野手としてプレーし、１９８６年に引退した。現役時代の打率は.278で242本塁打を記録した。オールスターには２度出場し、シルバースラッガー賞２度、ゴールドグラブ賞を１度獲得している。

監督としては、２２年間で４チーム：サンフランシスコジャイアンツ（’93-’02)、シカゴ・カブス（’03-’06）、シンシナティ・レッズ（’08-’13）、ワシントン・ナショナルズ（’16-’17）を率いた。今回、監督を探しているアストロズ、レッドソックス、メッツでは監督もコーチの経験もない。ここ２年間は監督から退いていた。監督通算成績は1863勝1636敗。７度のナ・リーグチャンピオンシップ（プレーオフ）に出場させ、’02年にはカブスを率いて、ワールドシリーズに導いたが敗退した為、まだワールドチャンピオンの経験はない。

サイン盗みスキャンダルのアストロズだが、アルツゥーべ、スプリンガー、ブレッグマン、グレインキー、バーランダーら投打共に実力選手が揃っている為、監督としての初のワールドチャンピオンタイトルを獲る可能性は十分にある。
