The Oakland Athletics have signed a minor contact with Japanese pitcher, Shohei Tomioka. The Nikkan Sports reported on January 30 JP time.

According to the source, Tomioka passed a tryout in Tokyo for the Athletics on November 9, last year. He sharply threw a fastball with 95 mph there, by which he received a high evaluation by scouts. Tomioka is going to Arizona for Spring Training in February.

Tomioka is 23 years old and right-handed pitcher, who played for a baseball club of the Vital-net inc in Japan, which is a non-professional team. He graduated from Sakurai High school in Toyama prefecture and Toyo University in Tokyo and is an unknown player nationwide. He had a plan to join the Japanese Independent League to aim for NPB (Nippon Professional Baseball) before taking the tryout.

It is very rare for Japanese players to challenge American baseball without the experience of NPB. They, usually, try Major League Baseball as an international free agent or by using the posting system after playing in NPB.

The number of Japanese players without any experience of professional baseball to go to America might increase. Today, young players will include not only NPB, but also MLB to become professional players in their way of thinking. I hope that Tomioka survives in the highly competitive Minor League and crack the MLB roster.

オークランド・アスレチックスは日本人の冨岡聖平投手とマイナー契約をしたと、日本時間、1月30日、日刊スポーツが報じた。

記事によると、冨岡投手は昨年11月9日に東京で行われた入団テストに合格したということだ。彼はテストで、約153km/hのキレのある速球を投げて、スカウトから高い評価を得た。2月には春季キャンプ参加のために、米国・アリゾナへ向かうそうだ。

冨岡投手は現在、23歳の右投げ投手で、社会人野球のバイタルネットでプレーしていた。富山県の桜井高校、東洋大の出身だが全国的には無名の投手で今回の入団テストを受けるまでは日本の独立リーグに所属し、NPBを目指すプランを持っていた。

日本人選手にとって、日本のプロ野球を経ないでアメリカ野球に挑戦するのは非常に稀なことだ。彼らは、通常は日本のプロ野球でプレーした後、国際フリーエージェントとなるか、ポスティング制度を利用する。

今後、こういった形でメジャーリーグを目指す選手が増えるかもしれない。今や若い選手にとって、プロ野球選手とは日本だけではなく、メジャーも視野に入れるケースもあるだろう。冨岡投手には、競争の激しいマイナーリーグを生き抜き、いつかメジャー昇格を勝ち取って欲しい。
