Major Leaguer resume Vol.76/ WBC Player’s resume Vol.62: Tommy Edman(St.Louis Cardinals) : Major Candidate for Team Korea: “Super Utility!”

Story:
Today's player's resume concerns the St.Louis Cardinals infielder Tommy Edman. Edman is a Korean-American and will join the Korean national team in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

The KAISPO's baseball analyst commented,
"Edman is a five-tool player preferred by professionals. I want to call attention to his tenacious offensive ability and solid defense in situations where his team is at a disadvantage or has a chance to score. His batting average with two outs was .324, and that with runners in scoring position was .324. He can hit regardless of which side(lefty or righty) of the opposing pitcher he faces as a switch hitter. In addition, he can expand a chance with a stolen base to get a good jump off a pitcher. And he has the utility to play as both an infielder and an outfielder. I want him to win his second Gold Glove and first stolen base leader in 2023. "

Tommy Edman was selected by the Cardinals with the 196th overall choice in the 6th round of the 2016 MLB draft out of Stanford University.

Edman was called up to the major league on June 8, 2019, and made his big league debut that night. He appeared in the ninth as a pinch-hitter to replace Ryan Helsey, striking out on a foul tip off right-hander Tyler Chatwood in a 9-4 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Six days later, Edman collected his first major league hit, a double into center field off lefty Steven Matz at Citi Field against the New York Mets. The infielder excellently notched .304/.350/.500 with 11 homers, 36 RBIs, and 15 stolen bases in 92 games played in his first season, positioning mainly third base, second base, and right field.

In 2020, the pandemic-shortened season, the switch hitter batted .250 with five long balls and 26 RBIs in 55 contests, playing primarily third base, second base, and right field.

In 2021, the 27-year-old player played in his career-most 159 contests and hit .262 with 11 home runs, 56 RBIs, the National League second most 41 doubles, and 30 stolen bases, showing good fielding, mainly as a second baseman, to win his first Gold Glove Award.

Edman finished the 2022 campaign with .265/.324/.400, 13 homers, and 57 RBIs in 153 games, stealing his career-best 32 bases, ranked second.

The 2021 Gold Glover has slashed .269/.322/.410 with 40 home runs, 175 RBIs, and 79 stolen bases in 459 games in his big league career at the end of the 2022 season.
