Major Leaguer resume Vol.94/ WBC Player’s resume Vol.80: Cal Quantrill(Cleveland Guardians) : Major Candidate for Team Canada: “15 wins with a straight overhand pitch!!”

■Today’s player
Today's player is the Cleveland Indians' starter, Cal Quantrill. Quantrill is from Canada and will pitch for Team Canada in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

■The KAISPO's baseball analyst comments
"Quantrill is a starting pitcher to lead the Guardians. He helped the guardians advance to the playoff in 2022, winning a team-leading and career-high 15 games. The righty had never had a losing game since July 11. Quatrill has five pitches, his sinker and cutter account for about 80% of his total pitches. His big curveball he throws down after making batters aware of the sinker and cutter is very effective.
Along with ace pitcher Shane Bieber, he will be expected to lead a strong Guardians pitching staff in 2023 and beyond."

■Story
Cal Quantrill was initially drafted by the New York Yankees in the 26th round of the 2013 MLB draft. But he didn't sign and entered Stanford University. Three years later, the San Diego Padres again selected him with the 8th overall pick in the first round of the 2016 MLB draft, and he signed that time.

Quantrill, the Padres' No.12 prospect, debuted against the Atlanta Braves on May 1, 2019. He started the game, allowing two runs over 5 2/3 innings and striking out three in the Padres' 5-1 loss.
On May 25, the right-hander made his fifth start versus the Toronto Blue Jays, tossing six solid innings with three runs allowed on just two hits to earn his first MLB win. He finished his first season with 6-8, a 5.16 ERA over 23 games, including 18 starts.

On August 31, 2020, before the trading deadline, the 27-year-old was traded by the Padres to the Cleveland Indians in a blockbuster trade. The Canadian starter had his best season in 2022. He concluded 15-5 with a 3.38 ERA in 186.1 frames through 32 starts. The 15 wins ranked 4th in the American League.

■MLB Career Stats
At the end of the 2022 campaign, the over-hander has been 31-16 with a 3.54 ERA and 369 strikeouts in 471 innings across 113 contests in his four MLB seasons.
