Masahiro Tanaka Ranked in The Top 20 FAs in 2021

MLB.com has already released the top 20 free agents in 2021. The New York Yankees pitcher, Masahito Tanaka has been ranked the fifth.

The following is a comment about Tanaka by MLB.com;


“Tanaka has lost some velocity over the years, but he did alter his splitter grip midseason in 2019 and had some good results with it. He’s a quality arm, despite some bouts with the long ball. The big-picture worry is the partial UCL tear in his throwing elbow, but that has been a known issue since mid-'14 and hasn’t made him miss significant time.”


Tanaka joined the Yankees through the posting system after playing for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of NPB from 2007 to 2013. The right-hander had a 7-year, big deal worth $155 million with NYY in January in 2014. This season is the last year on the contract. But, the Yankees might recontact with him. 

After joining New York, the 31-year old reached to a two-digit number of wins for six years in a row and his winning average was not below fifty percent each year. The righty went 75-43 with a 3.75 ERA and 947 strikeouts throughout his Major career. Also, he had six Opening Day starting pitchers and two All-Star Game nominations. 

He has surely lost some velocity and has become a breaking ball pitcher in the US. He can Exquisitely control his split and slider into the four corners of the strike zone. So many pitchers can not do so. He had 11-9 last season, which lost his shine, but will be able to proceed to the next big step in the free agent market depending on his results this season.

MLB.COMが早くも2021年のFA有望株のトップ20を発表した。ニューヨーク・ヤンキースの田中将大投手が15位にランクされた。


以下が田中投手の論評だ。


”田中投手は近年、急速が衰えているが、昨シーズン中盤にスプリットの握りを変えたことで良い結果を出した。本塁打を打たれるところはあるが、好投手だ。心配な点は、右肘靭帯の部分断裂だ。しかし、2014年の半ばから知られるようになったが、長期の離脱をしなかった。”



田中投手は、2007年から2013年まで日本プロ野球の楽天で活躍した後、2014年にポスティングシステムでヤンキースに入団。当時の契約は、7年総額1億5,500万ドルの大型契約だった。今季が契約の最終年となっているがヤンキースが再契約を結ぶ可能性もある。

入団以降、田中投手は、6年連続で二桁勝利で負け越しはない。開幕投手を6回務め、オールスターには２度出場している。メジャー通算では164試合に登板し、75勝43敗、防御率3.75、947奪三振を記録している。

確かに球速は衰え、アメリカでは変化球投手のイメージが定着したとは言え、スプリットやスライダーの制球力は抜群だ。ストライクゾーンの四隅を一杯に付く投球はメジャーでも上位の実力だろう。咋シーズンは11勝9敗とやや精彩を描いたが、今季の活躍次第でFA市場で大きく次のステップを歩めるはずだ。
