What Is Shohei Ohatani’s Way in 2020?
AFP reported on January 4, an article about how new Angels’ manager, Joe Maddon is going to play SHOHEI OHTANI as a two-way star. 

Joe Maddon, who played for the Angels’ minor after graduation from Lafayette College, had worked for the Angels organization for 31 years. He, also, has taken manager jobs in the Rays and Cubs. He guided the Cubs to their first Champion since 1908. The 65-year-old had a three-year deal to return to the Angels as a manager. 

Maddon seems to think that OHTANI should have more at-bats. Japanese two-way star underwent Tommy John surgery last year, a left knee operation in September, and is now making in progress. OHTANI is expected to hit from an opening of this season. 

OHTANI had not basically batted on the days before or after he pitches in 2018 or in Japan, but, Maddon has a different plan. Through MLB.com, he said of his stance, “That's another 50 at-bats a year you're going to get out of the guy that you wouldn't get otherwise. Wouldn't the fans dig on that?. This guy is special.”

It means the new manager wants OHTANI to bat in games in which he pitches.

His plan could be understandable because OHTANI has already been one of the key batters in the team. 

On the other hand, general manager, Billy Eppler wants more information from the medical staff and trainers of the team before deciding how to do with SHOHEI OHTANI.

AFP通信が、１月４日、エンジェルスの監督に就任したジョー・マドン氏の大谷翔平選手の起用方法についての記事を配信している。

マドン氏は、大学卒業後、エンジェルスのマイナーリーグに所属したが、メジャー昇格のないまま引退。その後は31年間、球団に勤務した。一方で、レイズやカブスでの監督経験もあり、2016年にはカブスを1908年以来のワールドチャンピオンに導いた。今後、３年間、エンジェルスの指揮をとる。

マドン氏によると、大谷選手はもっと打席に立つべきだと考えているようだ。大谷選手は、昨年のトミージョン手術と今季の左膝の手術から慎重に復帰を目指しており、３月の開幕から打席に立つことを期待されている。

大谷選手は基本的には、（2018年は）投手登板の前後の日はバッターとして出場しなかったが、マドン氏は今季、違う考えを持っているようだ。彼はMLB.comを通して、「そういった状況を変え、大谷はもう５０打席に立つべきだ。ファンも望んでいるだろう？彼は特別な選手だ」と自身のスタンスを述べた。

これはつまり、投手としての登板時にもバッターとしても打席に立たせたい意向とみられる。
確かに大谷選手は、すでにチームの主軸打者の一人となっており、起用回数を減らしたくないという考えは理解できる。

一方で、ゼネラルマネージャーのビリー・エップラーは、打者として週に５試合に加え、週に１試合の投手登板と決める前に、チームのメディカルスタッフやトレーナーからのもっと情報を得たいとしている。
